Dear host family,

First of all I want to thank you for hosting me for ten months in your family.

Now I want to intodruce myself to you.

My name is Katharina, but my friends and my family call me Nanni. If you want, you can also call me Nanni.

I will be 16 on January 26th next year. Since I was born I have lived in Nuertingen. It’s a town with a population of about 40,000 inhabitants in the south of Germany not far away from Stuttgart.

You can do many interesting things here like going to the Black Forest, to France or to Lake Constance. The landscape around here is also very beautiful. The Swabian Alb is not far (you can see it from our balcony), where you can go skiing and here’s a river where you can go rowing as well.

I live together with my parents and my elder brother in a flat on the outskirts of Nuertingen.

My dad, Helmuth, is 53 years old. He works as a controller in a firm in Nuertingen. That’s very convenient because he can walk to his work and so my mum can take the car. Normally I get on well with him, but sometimes we argue when one of us has a bad mood or when we’re tired.

My mum, Sabine, is 47 years old. She has only a part-time job at an organic food store  in the next village. Till I was 9 years, she stayed at home all the time. I get on very well with her. She is like a friend to me, though I have to help her with the housework, and housework is not the thing I like most. But I like cooking, though I can just cook simple things like Spaghetti and Pizza. So I often cook during my vacation when my mum isn’t at home.

My brother, Stefan, is 18 years old. He often gives me a ride to school(he goes to the same school) or somewhere else when my mum hasn’t got time. I think that’s very nice of him, but sometimes we argue as well.

In my freetime I do lots of things. I like reading very much, especially fantasy books like “The Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter”. Nearly all the time when I’m at home I listen to music. Normally I listen to the radio. My favourite musicians are Avril Lavigne, Robbie Williams, Blue and Reamon( a German band).

When the weather is good I often go outside. I meet my friends and we go shopping, to the cinema or we go eating ice-cream. I like lying in the garden and relaxing as well.

An important part of my life is sport. I think I am not very sporty but I like doing sports, except jogging. The only sport I do in a club is basketball. I like the atmosphere in our team and we are very successful. Last year we became third of our state. I started playing basketball when I started walking because my parents played it as well. So they took me with them to their games.

But I also do other sports in my freetime like volleyball and rollerskating. When I was 10 I started horseback riding, but unfortunately I had to stop it this year because I haven’t got enough time.

Another important thing in my life is music. I have play the clarinet since I was 9 years. 3 years ago I became an aktive member of our town orchestra, which takes part in competitions. If possible I would like to play the clarinet in Canada, too.

At school I sing in the choir, that’s very interesting. Normally we give two concerts a year. One at Christmas in a church and the other one at the end of the schoolyear. Before our concerts we go together to a house like a convent to practice for a weekend.

When I was smaller I also played the fluet but I stopped it because I hadn’t got enough time.

At school one of my favourite subjects is music, but I also like Englisch, French and geography. Normally I like going to school, because there I meet my friends and most of the teachers are nice as well. I go to the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in the 10th grade. The school is not very far of my home so I go by bike or I walk, when it rains my mum or my brother gives me a ride there. I’m a very good student and so I help my friends and I also give younger students private lessons. I think that’s a good chance for me to get a view into the work of a teacher and these lessons support my wish to become a teacher.

I would say that I have just 3 closer friends because for me it’s important that I can trust them. These 3 friends are all totaly different and so I think we fit together very well. I’m the helpful person and the quiet one of my friends, but I wouldn’t say that I’m shy. I’m also a well-balanced person, I’m honest, openminded and very fond of children. So I like playing with my two little cousins very much.

I am also interested in facts about other countries and its customs. I like to learn more about other cultures and people. So my wish to go to Canada was developed. I like meeting foreign people, that’s why I took part in two student exchanges to France and to Wales last year. But these exchanges were just for ten days. I’m  interested in other languages as well, because it’s good to find a job later when you speak another language like your native language. So I learn at school 3 foreign languages. I like to learn more about the Canadian schoolsystem, the Canadian way of life and how it is to live in a Canadian family as well. I think it won’t be a problem for me to intergrate myself in your family. This year is a unique chance to bring these aspects together. And I want to thank you very much that you give me this chance and host me.

I look forward to seeing you.

Yours sincerely

Katharina

Dear host family,

first of all we would like to thank you very much that you are going to host our daughter Katharina in your house and that she will be able to share your family-life.

We support Katharina’S wish to stay in Canada in your family and we hope that there will be a good understanding between you and Katharina.

We appreciate that you will give her a home and family-feeling for about ten months.

Now we will tell you something about our family:

Katharina’s dad Helmuth is 54 years old. He is the head of the controlling department in a machine tools company a few minutes by foot away from our house.

Katharina’S mum Sabine is 47 years old. She studied Textileengineering and worked 5 years in this job. Then she stayed 12 years at home. Since 6 years she works as a secretary in health food shop.

Katharina’s brother Stefan is 18 years old and he will leave school next summer and will go to study engineering.

Now we will tell you something about Katharina:

Katharina is an independent, uncomplicated, responsible and very well organized teenager. She has no problems to find friends or to intergrate in a new group. The pupils and the teachers at school like her very much, because she is quiet, well-balanced and a concentrated girl and she is always ready to help the others when they have problems. She is also a very good pupil. She does her homework and learning for tests all by herself. She spends a lot of time in her room with reading, writing letters, listening to music and doing her school affairs.

When you ask her to help with the housework she will do it soon and accurate. She lays and clears the table and she tidies up her own room.

Twice a week she goes to the basketball training and at the weekends from October until April to basketball matches with her team. One evening a week she plays the clarinet in the orchestra of our town and sometimes on Sundays they have a concert. On Saturdays she takes newspapers around with her friend Vanessa. The money she earns for this job she saves and she will pay a part of this exchange with it.

Sometimes she goes with friends to the cinema, eat ice-cream or goes shopping.

She never drinks any alcohol or smokes. Also she lives very close to the rules we gave her and she always comes home at the time we told her in the evenings. There are never discussions about the time to return. So can rely upon Katharina without any limits.

We are very glad to have found you as the family who is willing to help Katharina to realize her dream to live ten months in Canada, to discover this wonderful country and to get to know its people. It is a great chance for her and her future life and job. We are happy that we found you as a family that accept Katharina as a member of your family and we are convinced that she feels fine and will be taken well care of.

Best wishes

Yours sincerely
